“Foolish woman,” Milla criticized after Radha departed. She sat on the bed next to Claire. A moment later, the panel was lifted away from the window, and Madyan slipped into the room. “You heard?” Milla inquired.

“I did,” Madyan said scornfully.

“Does she really believe that I have a claim to the throne?” Claire asked them.

“She does,” Madyan replied. “And it is true.”

“But I don’t want to be the Queen of Nifolhad,” Claire declaimed. “I don’t want to be the Queen of anywhere.”

“Nor do we wish it,” Madyan concurred. “There is another who holds that right.”

“But who? Princess Aghna was the last of her line, and she is gone. Is there another, a sister, perhaps?”

“No, there’s no sister,” Madyan answered, then stepped back.

Had it been right in front of her all this time? “Aghna,” Claire guessed, turning to Milla.

“I am pleased to meet you, Cousin Claire. For we are related, are we not, descended from the same blood hundreds of years past?”
